The History of Broome

Aboriginal Art

Home to indigenous people for over 30,000 years, the Kimberley was first visited by Europeans in the 1600s.

The region abounds in amazing and ancient features and fascinating local culture. Ask us about getting into a cultural tour from any of our hotels to experience the magic and beauty of the Kimberley’s cultural heritage first hand.

European pioneers explored the region in the 16th and 17th century. Englishman William Dampier recorded much of the Flora and Fauna he observed from his ship HMS Roebuck. The ship is the namesake for Broome's Roebuck Bay today.
